About the author
Steve Brouwer has written about the American political economy and American culture for over twenty years. His most recent book is Robbing Us Blind: the Return of the Bush Gang and the Mugging of America. His series of Sharing the Pie books (1988, 1992, and 1998) have explained the connection between the startling increase in economic inequality in the United States and the extreme right-ward shift in the political scene. In another book, Conquest and Capitalism:1492 – 1992, he introduced readers to the predatory history of European/North American capitalism in the Western Hemisphere. And with his wife, sociologist Susan Rose, he wrote Exporting the American Gospel: Global Christian Fundamentalism (1996), which examines the meaning of American-style religious fundamentalism and its aggressive propagation in many parts of the world.
For many years, the author has also worked at another trade – carpenter, builder, and designer. In this capacity, he launched successful enterprises that practiced democratic, egalitarian approaches to business and economics – for example, he has organized and built housing cooperatives, founded a worker-owned construction company, and developed a community-owned rental housing program.
Steve Brouwer is the father of four and grandfather of two. He lives with his family alongside the Conodoguinet Creek, a few miles outside of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
